Hiking in the Linville Gorge Wilderness
The Linville Gorge Wilderness is a hidden gem nestled in the mountains of north-central North Carolina. Just 10 miles long, the Linville River Green Wilderness gives you a scenic escape from the concrete city of Charlotte. For hiking adventures, canoeing, swimming, and fly fishing, the river offers miles of flat, clear water. For those looking for more than hiking, the spectacular cliffs and gorges of the gorge are a sight to behold. For those looking for solitude, seclusion, or even a place to raise wild horses, the area is perfect.
The Linville Gorge Wilderness is also home to some of the most beautiful wildflowers and plants in eastern North Carolina. Maintaining by the U.S. Forest Service, it includes 11,000 acres surrounded by the beautiful Pisgah National Forest and the Linville River. The landscape of the Linville Gorge Wilderness has earned the name “mountain oasis.”
Hikers and backpackers come to the Linville Gorge Wilderness for many reasons. Whether you want to backpack along the trails through the majestic mountains of western north Carolina, or search for the many geocaches scattered throughout the area, there is something for every hiker and backpacker. Backpackers can explore the many trails through the National Forests or explore the many backcountry campgrounds, lodges, and amenities available in the gorge.
For those interested in mountain biking, the gorge has over 30 miles of trails ideal for mountain biking. There are great beginner trails, as well as expert tracks, depending on your skill level. The main trail system is called the Ridge Trail and has several interconnected rock gardens that make up the gorge. Another popular trail is the Mount Mitchell Rock Trail, which has a rocky and steep ascend toward the top of the mountain.
Hiking enthusiasts have another option besides hiking and backpacking trails: camping in the Linville Gorge Wilderness. Camping is available at numerous locations, including primitive camping sites, cabins, and several fully staffed RV parks. Although not ideal, most of these sites are on public roads and only require permits if camping on private land. At most of these sites, camping is allowed with up to three people in self-contained trailers. If you bring your own vehicle, there are also quite a few places to park nearby for easy parking, showers, bathrooms, and other facilities.
As noted above, the Linville Falls and Blue Ridge Parkway System are one of the most popular hiking regions in the United States. Because of the natural beauty of the area, there are thousands of people who choose to travel this high desert region each year to escape traffic, find solitude and enjoy the amazing scenery found in this area. However, although camping is allowed in most areas, some areas may require a camping license. For those who plan to go to the Linville Falls and Blue Ridge Parkway System, a citation is required before a campground will grant a camping permit.
Another trek into the wilderness requires hikers to take the North Carolina Coast Trail which begins at the Blowing Rock Overlook. The trail climbs gradually to the Black Warrior Mountain and then takes hikers on a strenuous hike to the Sea Caves. For the best views of the area, a hiker should pass through Rainbow Springs. This is a popular day trip, so the tide may be low in some areas. Hikers are often required to walk in deep creek waters in order to view the beautiful underwater landscapes of the ocean and coastal plain.
Backpackers can make their way easily through the Linville Gorge Wilderness by using maps and other hiking accessories that include water. There are also numerous opportunities for bird watching, viewing wildlife, or just taking in the beautiful scenery and vegetation. Hiking can be a romantic and rewarding activity, especially when paired with a sunset stroll along the shores of the gorge. The National Park Service offers many park activities and events throughout the year including camping, car touring, and walking tours. Picnics also are common activities in the park.
