Sequoia National Park lies just south of Kings Canyon National Park in California’s central Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is well-known for its enormous sequoia trees, particularly the famous General Sherman Tree, which dominates the Giant Forest. The cave known as Tunnel Tree is a striking granite dome offering breathtaking park views. Just nearby is the Cave Tree, an indigenous tree cut for the highway that now serves as a major tourist attraction. Just down the road is the Moro Rock, an ancient carved out granite statue that was once used as a lookout point. Just past this you will find Sequoia State Park, home to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, plus other nearby attractions.
Sequoia National Park has many attractions for visitors, but in particular many people visit the Sequoia Caverns to view their amazing waterfalls. The waterfalls are spillway’s, that means rainwater trickles down from high up and over the falls. While standing in front of these waterfalls gives you a great view of the surrounding area, the water can be cool to the touch depending on the time of year. The waterfalls aren’t only a sight to behold, they are also good for relaxation. Walking through the cave system can be a refreshing break from the fast pace of city life. There is no fee to enter the cave system and you don’t have to worry about leaving your shoes behind.
Sequoia National Park also offers a great trekking experience. There are many guided tours available. The longest tour takes two days and includes a two-day stay at a hotel and then hiking through the park. It starts at the La Jolla Point Lodge, where you’ll see many spectacular views and beautiful scenery. You’ll take a bus tour to Sequoia National Park headquarters and return to the lodge. This tour is not recommended for children under the age of twelve.
Another fun way to enjoy the park is by mountain climbing. There are many areas where you can climb including the Sierras, juniper forests, and juniper bough forests. Each season has a specific mountain climbing season. There are guided treks out of Sequoia National Park to the highest peaks in the park, including Castle Peak and Saddlebag Mountain.
If you are looking for a little less formal activities, there are numerous campgrounds in the park. These sites offer different size sites and different prices depending on what you want and need. Sites can be as basic or as luxurious as you want. The campgrounds have bathrooms and fireplaces. There are sometimes even picnic areas.
There are a couple different places to stay in the park. Two popular options include cabins in the park or rooms at one of the many resorts. Most of the accommodations are on the Pacific Ocean beach. There are showers, bathrooms, and hot tubs. There are several restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance.
Mountain climbing is the main attraction for Sequoia National Park. The best time to go is from May through October. The weather is usually very hot in the spring and winter, but not usually hot enough to damage your tent. The best months to do mountain climbing are June, July, and August. In between these dates are usually dry summer weather. If you want to hang around at the site for a while, you might consider staying at one of the many lodges in the park.
Although the park is a protected area, hunting is not permitted. It is also against the law to feed wild animals on the park land. However, they do run wild during certain times of the year. There are many different types of wild animals that can be seen in the park, including elk, deer, sea cows, and moose.
