Marblehead Lighthouse Tours

Marblehead Lighthouse is a historic spot situated on the southern end of Marblehead Sound in Marblehead, Ohio. It is a popular destination for lovers of all things ocean related. Marblehead Lighthouse tours have been made famous and are offered several times during the summer and fall. The beautiful lighted interior of the lighthouse offers a spectacular view of the waterfront and the beautiful lake. Many people tour the lighthouse with the hopes of catching a glimpse of the few ships that sail by during the night.

Marblehead Lighthouse was originally built as a breakwater to protect the local island from European pirates. In the 1800’s the lighting fixture was moved closer to shore so that the British Navy could use it as a light tower to guide their ships as they cruised nearby. The lighthouse was later converted into an active lighthouse to warn people of approaching vessels as well as receiving mail. In the early years the lighthouse received two tall crystal chandeliers inside the lighthouse, which has since burned out. The only source of light was a battery located in the western wall of the building.

Marblehead Lighthouse tours are offered each day and provide a wonderful view of the beach and surrounding water. Some tours are free and others charge a small fee. Marblehead was chosen as the location of this historic lighthouse because of its perfect conditions for sailing ship tours. The water around Marblehead Lighthouse is clear and calm, making for an ideal location for boating and sailing. Many people choose to tour the lighthouse just the way it was meant to be: as a working lighthouse. This special tour provides insight into the daily operations of the lighthouse and a glimpse into the history of the area.

Each morning the lighthouse is inspected and cleaned to prevent any possible harborage hazards. The inspection of the lighthouse continues on a regular basis throughout the year. On the first Tuesday of every month the keeper of the lighthouse tours the entire place making certain everything is in working order. Several historic plaques can also be found in the lighthouse that highlight its many activities during these times.

If you would like to enjoy one of these fascinating Marblehead Lighthouse tours you can go at anytime. However, the easiest time and the best time to visit is from March through November when the lighthouse is closed due to the nesting of many migratory birds. Boat tours are usually available but are rather pricey. You can always call ahead to find out what boats are available and if there are any special tours available at the time of your visit. If you have never been on a lighthouse tour it is highly recommended.
